Adara is actually a pretty unique inclusion among all the Green Lantern characters we're bringing into our timeline. Lots of our favorite Lanterns come from their own short story either from an anthology series or as a backup in the main comic, and then went on to appear regularly in one role or another among the rest of the Green Lanterns. Adara was something else again, and her unique introduction sets her up for a unique role in our story.
Adara's StoryIn 1994, the regular Green Lantern series was following Kyle Rayner, the sole remaining Green Lantern in the galaxy. This new status quo was still pretty new in issue # 56, which told a story exploring the personal repercussions to the surviving Green Lanterns of being depowered. We meet Adara, a former Green Lantern making her way in the galaxy, suffering deep remorse at her loss. She meets Kyle, and they share a brief affair (Kyle had a lot of those), before she attempts to steal his ring for herself. It doesn't work for her, and in her despair she kills herself. It could have been pretty heavy handed, but series writer Ron Marz does a really great job, giving the story some real pathos, helping Kyle grow as a hero as he sees what his power means to the galaxy.
We're going to use Adara the same way, making her part of the story where Kyle attempts to relight the power battery when her attempt to steal his ring goes down. We're also taking advantage of her time as a smuggler to establish her as one of the original Rogue Lanterns. |
