The second Doom Patrol was, apart from Robotman, entirely new characters. We've tried to build a different version of that team by moving Mento and Beast Boy into it, and including previous non-Doom Patrol character Metamorpho, but it would be all but impossible to craft this particular lineup without Arani, who went by Celsius in the comic.
The fact that she was introduced as the wife of Niles Caulder was awkward, as we'd never heard of her before. Later on, when other writers were starting to create some very strange retroactive rewrites for the Patrol, Caulder was claiming that she wasn't his wife, which created all sorts of issues as to who was telling the truth. This was later twisted even further later on as Caulder was depicted as more and more of a sinister character.
We did keep an element of creepiness in their relationship, but from a much more human direction; they're a married couple with a huge age difference that met when she was underage. While there's nothing INHERENTLY wrong with this sort of relationship, it's always more than a little unnerving. This is made even weirder by the fact that she lived apart from her husband. All these choices are made deliberately to show that their relationship has an fundamental imbalance to it, but it's also important that Arani is completely devoted to her husband and to following the clues that suggest that he might have survived the explosion that killed the Doom Patrol, as this becomes the driving narrative behind her team's existence.
