Al Rothstein started his career as Nuklon. He was part of Infinity Inc, a team made up of the children of the original Justice Society. A series of continuity rewrites made the existence of their team impossible, but several of the more popular members of the team managed to stay in continuity. Nuklon was briefly a member of the Justice League, although they took away his awesome mohawk, which is a downright tragedy. Eventually, he was incorporated into James Robinson & Dave Goyer's re-imagined Justice Society as Atom-Smasher, a character with much stronger ties to his own legacy, and to the legacy of the team. He was a featured character in a book with a huge cast for it's entire run, but the new 52 has phased out the character, replacing him with a rebuilt Al Pratt that features a blend of their powers.
We've drawn heavily on the period in Atom-Smasher's history when he started to follow Black Adam in a more proactive, violent splinter team of the Justice Society in response to the murder of his mother. We've made this a more personal story of vengeance, and made his subsequent incarceration and time with the Suicide Squad a transformative experience that leads to him taking on his new identity as Atom-Smasher.
Al is a very particular type of cool, and having him as a centerpiece of the Justice Society is a key part of it's success.
