Kate Goodwin appeared in the early 90's Doom Patrol, a book made popular under writer Grant Morrison, but created in the later issues by innovative writer Rachel Pollack. Rachel used the book to talk about a lot of rarely discussed topics like mestration and transsexuality. Kate is acknowledged as the very first transsexual comic book superhero. She has a fairly limited presense in DC comic, but we decided that not only is her presense a welcome one, but she is absolutely in keeping with the themes of otherness that permiate the best Doom Patrol stories, and we'd do well to include her in our version of DC.
Our Kate Goodwin Story
In the comics, Kate is a prostitute, and she gets her powers to turn solids into liquids and coagulate liquids into solids when she is exposed to negative energy while having sex with the current incarnation of Negative Man. I hope it doesn't seem like we are weakening the character to instead make her powers the result of a metagene that is triggered during her gender reassignment surgery; our thinking was that this put more focus on the parts of the story that we wanted to tell, but we'd welcome feedback on the change.
Also, we thought that there could be some improvement in her powers. Rather than simply change solids into liquids and visa versa, we imagine that she would at first have a dangerous transmutive power, altering materials at a molecular level without much control. It would be a devastating curse; something she would absolutely need Chief Caulder to help her control. Also, when we found the above panel with Kate making a reference to a goddess it suggested that Kate's metagene might actually have created a bond with the earth mother goddess Gaia. There's something very poetic about the notion of such a traditionally feminine and nurturing goddess having a transwoman as her avatar. Those original transmutive powers can evolve into something very useful and powerful. In the comics, Kate went briefly by the name "Coagula" and wore a costume that was essentially dominitrix-wear. While I don't have a recommendation for what form her superheroics might take, (as of now we merely have her moving on from the Doom Patrol and having a relationship with Cliff Steele), I suspect it is only a matter of finding just the right superheroic identity for her.
