~ "Marij’n. My absolute favourite “superhero” character, this drug world princess turned genetic scientist genius turned L.E.G.I.O.N. Director of Science & Medical managed to go toe-to-toe against the universe’s badasses alongside her powerhouse colleagues with nothing but her scientific intellect (and LEGION combat training) to get her through. Loved her to bits during LEGION and REBELS, but I lost track of her after that. She just vanished. Even Captain Comet’s miniseries (which was awful, btw) did not mention her, and they were a couple for many years before this. In fact, if I remember correctly, her last appearance was in his arms, while they were descending from flight. What happened to her? Please tell me she is alive and well and will rejoin the team upon its inevitable reform :)
Thanks for this message! Part of what I love about a large project like this is that I keep discovering other people's favorite characters. For folks not quite familiar with Marij'n (I read that as a sci-fi version of "Mary Jane" but your mileage my vary), she's the wife of Garryn Bek, and was the lead scientist and medical officer to the L.E.G.I.O.N.
Sometimes it's very difficult to read a character's story without also recognizing the sort of meta-narrative that is the actual writing and production of the comic. The entire narrative of LEGION was an effort to create an extension of the Legion of Superheroes in the current timeline, and whether it was successful or not totally depends on who you ask. It has its fans obviously (because you and I are talking about it) but it never really carried the narrative weight to have its stories branch out and effect the larger DC narrative. Given the fact that the ACTUAL Legion is being continually rewritten with varying degrees of success, I don't know that this experiment with creating a version of the team to exist in modern continuity has much chance at being revisited. Marij'n, as far as my research can find, never appeared anywhere but within the pages of L.E.G.I.O.N. or R.E.B.E.L.S. apart from the DC Who's Who Anthologies. As far as my reading can tell, her story just stopped with the series.
Now, this actually gives us a pretty interesting opportunity to create our own version of the character that really stands out and shows everyone exactly what you love about her. She's obviously co-existing in the same narrative space as Vril Dox which means that simply making a version of her rooted in her genius slightly redundant, but there are absolutely ways we can take her, really focus in on the elements of her character that make her unique, and make something that everyone will immediately love the same way you do.
So... take a look at the story I already have in place for L.E.G.I.O.N. It's pretty light right now, just a basic framework. Within that context, tell me about what you imagine your idealized version of Mari would be, how would she stand out, what sort of adventures should she have? Give me a larger framework of her life both before we meet her in the comics and after she stopped appearing. Let's incorporate your favorite character into this story and make her everyone else's favorite also :)
