9 years ago - 28-year-old Ralph quits the Justice League when Doctor Light attacks Sue Dibny. He becomes a full-time detective.
2 years ago - 35-year-old Ralph & Sue Dinby are attacked by an unknown arsonist. Ralph comes out of retirement to track her down, deducing that it was by Jean Loring.
The two things Elongated Man is most remembered for are his stint in the Statelite Era Justice League, and his participation in the Identity Crisis, a story so fraught with character misuse it actually hurts me to think about.
The fact is, Ralph and Sue are great. He started as a Flash supporting character but once he got his own backup stories it was just him and his wife, traveling the country in a convertible, solving mysteries. THAT'S fun. THAT'S a concept you can get behind. Especially since they really are one of the best couples in comics, because they are obviously head over heels for each other.
So no, we won't be killing anyone off or making them suffer horrible abuse just to advance someone else's story. These two deserve to have a pleasant retirement, where they can just travel around, solving mysteries. That's a better story.
As far as his powers and his origins go, as long as we allow that he's a detective first, it all more or less makes sense. If he discovered the Ginko formula as part of his investigations, then it works. It's even a power he can decide to stop using once he retires, allowing them to just be a clearly-in-love couple solving crimes. I like that.
