8 years ago - 25-year-old Jaques is drugged with a street version of of joker gas by smugglers. He tries to save his own life using a regenerative nano solution, manifesting the Creeper.
The Creeper is one of those characters that is damn near impossible to explain to someone. His origins have been redone a half-dozen times and his powers barely make sense. Half the point of the character is that he DOESN'T make sense, that there's an aura of inscrutable madness in his basic concept. That's part of what makes him such a fan favorite, but it makes him very hard to pin down when trying to craft a timeline.
Trying to distill his various backstories down to a single origin is tricky, but we've arrived at a simplified version of a few of the more popular ones. As a reporter, Jaques was following criminals who were smuggling a regenerative nano solution when he is stricken with a street version of joker venom. He takes the solution in an attempt to save his own life, but this means that his biology is rewritten. He is able to manifest a version of himself enhanced by the nano solution, but a version is completely insane.
If there's any one huge change we made, it's that Jack Ryder is now Jaques Ryder. As cool as Creeper has always been, he's always been a bizarre outsider, and as we tried to figure out just what his place in the world was, it kept coming back to finding a way to make him a part of something larger while still retaining his singular weirdness. The answer was the Global Guardians; a team of heroes with a single purpose but separated by nationality. Making the Creeper a character from another country fits perfectly into his particular weirdness, while still letting him be the awesome freak we love.
