Sometimes you can tell when a character is particularly loved by their creator. Geoff Johns created Courtney Whitmore in memory of his sister who died in the explosion of TWA Flight 800 in 1996, using her name and personality. She went on to be featured in his Justice Society, and was consistently a beloved character. She's survived for quite a while more or less intact, which is a rare feat in a comic company that prides itself on misogyny and horrific character abuse.
A lot of credit is probably due to Geoff, which is weird because I often find myself blaming him for some of the more extensive nonsense going on in the DC universe at large. But the soft spot he clearly has for his character has kept her whole and awesome for almost two decades.
I don't think there's anything that changed in our version of her story at all. Even the order and duration of her timeline have remained more or less the same. That's pretty incredible.
